This brand new class of students is going to rock the world! 50 high schoolers are beginning an audition-only, music-choice program. These talented musicians are joining a rigorous high school program at my school.
My students are immersed in a project-based learning environment enriched with music and technology education opportunities.
We value the authentic, the challenging, the excellent, and the beautiful. My class is always working on at least one project, from debating the greatest issues of our time to creating a book review website dedicated to students, or creating student-led book clubs to deepen their reading and discussion skills. Because of our small size, the students are very close-knit and have truly come to think of themselves as a family.
My Project
Studies show that students can't learn unless they feel safe and comfortable. What better way to create a cozy classroom space than to add some couches? This project will bring two futons into our new classroom space. This will make our learning area more comfortable, more inviting, and more mature. These freshmen are excited to start their first year of high school and are ready for a change in space. An inviting new room is a great way to start a school year.
These couches will invite students into our learning space, provide alternative seating options, and make the room feel inviting.
They will also create an atmosphere reminiscent of the real world learning environment, such as a coffee shop or a modern office. Students will have the freedom to work on the couches, breaking the mold of the strict, sterile classroom where the only place to sit is a desk in a straight row.
Students appreciate the opportunity to make the space their own. These couches will make this a possibility for these amazing, creative students. While couches might not seem like a big deal, to students it sends a message that we care about the place where they work. Imagine a group of students hard at work on writing a letter or a speech, annotating a primary source from World War II, or curled up and reading a great novel. This is what I hope will happen in my classroom thanks to these sofas.
