My Students

My students love learning from others and working collaboratively. They like having the opportunity to share their ideas with other students whether it be in whole group or small groups which allows new ideas to be presented, debated, and improved upon. In my classroom, students are meeting on the floor at least 5 times every day.

The great thing about 5th graders is that they are young enough to get excited about learning but are now able to take more control of their own growth and learning.

My Project

Having this carpet will give my students a comfortable place to meet throughout our day instead of sitting on the cold, hard tile floor. Most days we will begin our day with a Community Building Circle on the floor where it is important for all members to see each other to build that sense of belonging and encourage communication.

Because I teach English Language Arts, my use of read-alouds and modeling strategical thinking is important.

During ELA, students need to be at the point of instruction and the best place for that is on the floor in front of the teacher. This also allows a place for students to put their heads together for collaborative learning activities. Having this carpet in our room will enhance my students' ability to focus on the task at hand.
