My students need a comfortable space in order to fully focus on student-centered, collaborative learning. This table and stools will provide a relaxed, inviting atmosphere for them!
My students are ages 15-18 and are individuals who thrive on a sense of community. They live in a small town that prides itself on support and care for its fellow neighbor. These young adults embody that mentality in the classroom as well.
My students love to be challenged and never cease to amaze me with their ingenuity and creativity.
They so often have profound ideas that are wise beyond their years. They have much to share with those around them!
My Project
Flexible seating options encourage student-centered, collaborative learning, all while creating a comfy, welcoming environment. Having the optimal environment for my classroom has always been something that I've worked hard to attain. It has always been important to me that my classroom have a safe, welcoming atmosphere where students can learn and grow. I take pride in the appearance of my classroom and always want my students to be comfortable and ready to learn. The days of traditional desks are fading away, and I would like my classroom to grow with the change. Students learn in a variety of ways and rarely just sit in a desk for an entire period anymore. Replacing some of my desks with two standard tables and stools and a pub table and stools would provide my students some seating options. I will keep some of the desks in my room to account for the students who wish to remain in a traditional space. My classroom will still have structure to support learners, but it will have flexibility to adapt to various needs and preferences that allow students a sense of choice.
I teach several college prep courses (Expository Writing, Contemporary Novel), and in those courses we focus on peer editing, discussion, and student-centered activities.
Having seating options where students can comfortably and openly engage in these practices will not only enhance my teaching style, but will also enhance the functionality of my classroom. My classroom is receiving new workstation counters that are being placed on the perimeter of my room, and the addition of pub tables, stools, and standard tables will help with the entire collaboration layout.
