Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a high poverty Title I school. Most are eligible for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Their parents have limited incomes, and there is little money to invest in extras. I have few parent volunteers. More than fifty percent of my class speaks a language other than English at home, so many are not English proficient.
My amazing students are beginning readers with limited English reading skills.
Success comes slowly, but each hard-earned step is celebrated by all. The classroom is inviting, the curriculum rigorous, and the students are engaged and determined for success!
My Project
My students currently sit on an old, stained carpet in various states of disrepair. It is not inviting nor attractive to the students. The floor underneath and in the rest of the room consists of linoleum tiles. Sometimes students would rather sit at their tables than to sit on the carpet.
My students would love to have a new, comfy, classroom carpet!
Most of our daily learning takes place while at the carpet. Reader’s workshop, word study, math, science, and writer’s workshop all begin and end here. It is also used as a place for reading during independent and buddy reading time.
The classroom carpet is the center of learning in a first grade classroom. To have a new one would be much appreciated!
