My students are kind, creative, intelligent children who are talented in both English and Spanish. They understand and celebrate the importance of being bilingual. Despite some of them coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, they come to school ready to learn and full of enthusiasm. They consistently practice our school's motto of R.O.A.R.! That means have Respect, Organization, an A+ Attitude, and be Responsible. They are not only wonderful students, they are humble teachers as well.
"We are all pupils and we are all teachers." -Gilbert Highet
My students will joyfully appreciate these alternative seating choices when it's time for reading and writing. The hard plastic and metal desk chairs are hard to sit in all day long. Many of my second graders need alternative seating to be able to get comfortable and get focused.
A comfortable and welcoming classroom environment in the beginning of the year is so important to building a reading and writing community; if my students have multiple options for seating, that will give them a great start!
The couch will be a comfortable area for partner reading and writing, and the bean bag and cushions will allow students to give themselves a little more focused space in other areas of the classroom for silent reading and freewriting.
