Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a public Colorado elementary school located in a high-poverty community. Our school is a turnaround school that has shown headline-worthy academic growth over the past few years. We work under the motto, "Happy kids learn more!" and are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure our students' success.
I work as a reading interventionist, serving students in grades K-5 who benefit from additional support with learning to read and write.
The students I work with are currently scoring in the bottom 20% of all readers in their classrooms. My goal is to accelerate their reading and writing growth, bringing them up to grade level!
My Project
During intervention lessons, students sit around a U-shaped table. Our group times are short (about 30 minutes each) and it is critical that students are able to focus and stay engaged in lessons! Currently, we have plastic chairs that are very, very old! As kids wiggle around, the chairs squeak and distract other students. The chairs are also are hard and uncomfortable. As all of the students I work with are reading significantly below grade level, many of them find reading frustrating. Being physically uncomfortable adds to the challenge of learning to read for the first time.
Would you rather read in a hard plastic chair, or curled up on a plush, comfortable seat?
The cube shaped storage ottomans we are requesting will be used as comfy seating around my small group table. When my students' physical needs are met, they will be able to relax, become more engaged in our lessons, and maximize their learning time! The seats we are requesting also have storage inside! Since our "classroom" is really a small, shared office space, this will help us better organize our learning materials and enhance our learning environment!
On behalf of my growing readers, thank you so much for considering our project!
