My Students

As a teacher in a severe/profound intellectual disabilities classroom, my students are faced with many challenges every day. I have six students with disabilities such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Chromosomal abnormalities. My students have complex academic and sensory needs. Although they learn differently than other students, each one of my students is unique and brilliant in his or her own way. Students in my classroom are working on goals related to sight words, comprehension, money identification, counting and more.

The students in my class teach me as much, if not more, as I teach them each day.

When I have the pleasure of receiving a smile from my kids, it brings joy to my heart and can turn a bad day into a great day in a split second. My goal for each school day is to increase independence in my students and to promote engagement in curriculum through the positive reinforcements that motivate my students most.

My Project

My students need a carpet that they can sit on in the classroom to complete activities and participate in lessons. Wouldn't you prefer to sit on a nice soft rug rather than in a hard school chair all day? I want to provide my students with different seating options so that they can learn in the way that best suits their needs. This carpet will allow my classroom to become a place that feels more like home for my students. Many of my students use wheelchairs, so this carpet would also allow them to get out of their chairs and learn while stretching their bodies.
