My students need seats for our cool down corner. These cushions will help provide a warm and inviting space for students to come and practice their cool down strategies when their emotions are escalating.
Our school is a Title 1 school where many of the students are living below the poverty line, are English Language Learners, and are FARM (free or reduced-price meal) students. In my classroom, I have the most amazing students. I love seeing how excited they are to come to school and learn. My students learn through exploration and play. I need more classroom resources to make sure my students are getting the best experience. Pre-K is the first school experience for my kids so we work hard to create a warm, welcoming environment where students feel comfortable to learn. My Project
Our school implemented a "cool down corner" where students can go to anytime throughout the day when they need some quiet time to cope with their emotions. Some of our students deal with many stressors including poverty, homelessness, and incarcerated parents.
Many of my 4-5 years old students have dealt with more trauma in their short lives than many adults have to face in a lifetime.
We spend time teaching and modeling strategies to help students handle their emotions instead of becoming aggressive or destructive.
The comfy chair will be used in our cool down corner allowing students the ability to sit in a relaxing space while they practice breathing, counting, or just taking some time to work through their feelings and emotions. Having the cool down corner allows students to have a quiet and safe space to go when their emotions are escalating, and I want to make it a comfortable space for them with the addition of the comfy chairs. Students will be able to set the timer and return to the group when they are ready to learn. They can always reset the timer if they need more time in the cool down corner. The table top caddie will be used to hold our current fidget toys, breathing cards, yoga cards, and paper and writing materials that are kept in the cool down corner.
