My Middle School students are wild in the best possible way! They are going through so many changes and attempting to adopt new identities, trying new things out to see who they are and who they want to be. My students range from scared sixth graders to independent seventh graders and adventurous eighth graders.
In addition to spanning all three grade levels, my students come from many socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures.
Many are bilingual or English Language Learners. Our school is Title I, and all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students don't see the value of books because they are not present in their homes.
I teach in a reading lab, where I am privileged to work with small groups on their specific reading challenges. We utilize small groups in an effort to individualize their classroom experience as much as possible. Part of the small group rotation includes a reading center. I have an abundance of books, but nowhere to put them. I would like to make our reading nook as comfortable as possible to help them understand what J.K. Rowling meant when she said, "If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book!"
My classroom is a reading lab divided into centers for small group work. One center revolves around independent reading. I would like to make this space as comfortable and inviting as possible in hopes of fostering a love of reading!
Although I've taught ELA for many years, this is my first year in this lab.
My room is woefully bare. I've begged, borrowed, and bought as much as I can, but our room still doesn't have the reading nook my students deserve. These materials will help my students cultivate a penchant for reading that will last for the rest of their lives!
