Many of my 5th graders in the Fall will come from my current 4th grade class! And what a great year to loop: they're curious, sweet and kind learners.
Hailing from all over Los Angeles, my kiddos come to us seeking a safe, kind place to learn STEAM concepts.

For the California missions play we performed this year, one group of kids even composed their own scene and song! They crave more innovative approaches to learning. Some are wiggly, and some tend to tune out when asked to sit still. I'm forever seeking new ways to best engage their talents.
My Project
Flexible seating has been shown to be beneficial to students who don't respond well to traditional classroom structure. As such, it made perfect sense to bring it into our progressive-minded, charter STEAM school, and that is exactly what the entire 5th grade has opted to do for 2018-19. Having just joined the 5th grade cadre for next year, I'm now trying to catch up to my 2 colleagues, who've already funded their switch to flex-seating.
I'm seeking to make my room both more visually appealing and more engaging.
In recognition of the fact that one size rarely fits all when it comes to the classroom, the implements I've selected will offer students the opportunity to choose the best fit for themselves. Bouncy chair (yoga ball), wiggle-able stool, floor seating, or air cushions to provide a layer of comfy balance to the hard, blue school chairs... With that choice will come responsibility--that elusive and wonderful kind which kids will eagerly take on--as they seek to merit the freedom to choose their own seating arrangement.
This project represents Phase One of my flexi-seating implementation, and a solid step towards achieving my full vision. Phase Two will involve a couch, standing desk, and expanded quantities of the items in Phase One.
