Our corporation has 70% of our students on free or reduced lunch so, for many of them, school is the one stable place where they can forget about any problems at home, receive a good breakfast and lunch and be surrounded by teachers and staff who offer them words of encouragement and love.
Empowering our future, one student at a time.
This is our school's mission statement. We strive to make our school an engaging place, meeting the needs of each and every student. It is a place where students come every day to enjoy learning in a variety of ways.
From the minute my spunky five- and six-year-old kindergartners enter the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth. Their minds are like little sponges ready to absorb, and I love filling those sponges with knowledge! I cannot control what goes on at home, but I can certainly control their experience during the school day while they are with me. By doing this in a creative, fun and positive way, I hope to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
We always hear that it is good to give students choices. Why then do we not provide our students with choices in where and how to sit in class each day? My students need fabric and a set of 30 five gallon buckets to be turned into seats to allow for alternative seating in the classroom. Purchasing these buckets will provide my students with a choice. My plan is to have my students remain at their tables while I am presenting the lesson and then, when it is time to work independently or with a partner, they may choose to move their buckets to another table, place it around the room, or choose to use the bean bags, lap tables, regular chairs or pillow pets that I already have to sit or lie down to do their work. These buckets will also be used to store their crayon box, math and writing journals as well as their writing books and poetry folders. This will allow them to have all their daily items right at their disposal and will eliminate the time lost passing these items out.
My hopes for this idea is that if my students are given these choices then they will be more attentive and comfortable and do better work.
This idea also requires me to move around the room and interact with my students instead of staying at the front of the room.
