Help me give my students my students a new set of Lego’s to explore, imagine, and learn to create as part of their learning process. In addition, our students will enjoy the new flex-space seating during floor-time activities.
My kindergarten class has been forever touched by the effects of Hurricane Michael on October 10, 2018. This hurricane has devastated their lives, including damages at school and their community. Several of my students are now considered homeless, due to this storm. They are living in campers or tents and are commuting long distances to be able to attend school. Although I have a small class now, I am hopeful several students will be able to return to our area and join our class again after the New Year, as they have been forced to leave due to no housing or lost jobs. It has been very common for these sweet children to refer to their homes as "my broken house".
Despite the upheaval in our hurricane-affected community, our students were excited about finally being able to return to school and restore some normalcy in their lives.
They were so excited to resume class schedules with their classmates and be able to immerse themselves into learning and interacting with their friends and classmates once again.
My Project
The use of Lego's in my classroom will serve my students well in encouraging problem-solving, imagination, and reasoning, as they work and play together in teams. Their learning will be enhanced, as they use these items for follow-up in creative writing stories, sequencing, and other related key items necessary for proficiency within their grade level. In addition, our flexible seating will be enjoyed by all, as they are comfortable and happy learners for an abundance of floor activities, as they work with others.
The materials chosen for this project will serve us well, as they will be used multiple times each day and in a variety of subjects and learning activities.
After all that our class and school have been through (as a result of Category 5 Hurricane Michael), we have realized the importance and blessing of working and learning together in a comfy, cozy environment. Some fun flexible seating, along with our new Lego's will go a long way in fostering this learning environment.
