Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember your favorite elementary teachers? As a special ed teacher, I hope that all my students know how much I care for each of their individual needs (academically and emotionally) This year, my students are first graders who live in Manhattan. Our school is a Title I school, a Title I school has a dedicated staff of amazing professionals who serve students from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards.
Our children are bright, talented and adorable!
As our students have diverse academic needs, they also have diverse social and emotional needs. I look forward to designing projects that address these specific needs so that our students feel happy, safe and calm in the classroom.
My Project
I am a special education teacher on the lower east side of Manhattan in a Title I school. The majority of my students come from low-income households. I have chosen two rugs from Lakeshore Learning for my ICT classroom. Most of our lessons take place in two meeting areas. A common ICT (integrated-Co Teaching) team teaching model is parallel teaching. In order to parallel teach we need TWO, beautiful, calming and welcoming rugs for our 1st grade students. Our meeting areas are where most of the “action” takes place. We learn, work, and play in these areas. These two rugs will provide our students with a bright and comfortable learning environment. Children learn better when they are able to feel safe and comfortable in the classroom. A rug also helps organize our meeting areas for each student to sit in their own spot. Students take ownership of their learning when they have a place of their own to sit. The rugs will also allow for more flexible seating and groupings for differentiation. During independent reading, we allow students to choose where they want to read. Our students can have the added choice of reading in a spot at the rugs. Our students will deeply appreciate and love two lovely rugs to fill in their learning environment.
