Every year my students come into their first classroom with varying backgrounds, abilities, and aspirations. They all hold dreams of what their first year of school will be like. They are all filled with the willingness of wanting to love school. I am their first gateway of instilling that love of learning into them as they begin their academic journey.
Even though a majority of my students are at risk, I do not let that hinder their assess to having the same opportunities as anyone else.
They are bright-eyed. They are all energetic. And by the end of the year, they leave knowing they are world changers! They succeed because they don't let anything stop them. I teach at a Title 1 school where all students receive free breakfast and most receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students come to school for the first time with limited school readiness because of it being unaffordable. I know that when they come into their classroom everyday, they feel secure, safe, and nurtured. They know that they can leave their problems at the door.
My Project
All of my students desire a space to call their own, a place where they can feel comfortable and ready to tackle learning throughout their day. With flexible seating, my students will have the choice of seating options in which they can work at their best. I've learned that at this age, students need to have the opportunity to sit, stand, or even lay down to engage in their learning. The more comfortable they are, the better their attitude towards school will be.
With choice in their seating, focus, engagement, and interactive participation becomes better as they tackle their learning throughout the day.
Flexible seating gives them that engagement and allows them to feel comfy as they learn. Kindergartens can make use of their space in a productive way. When they have comfy areas and seating options to choose from, it allows them to take ownership and responsibility in their ability to be the best they can be as they take on new challenges in the classroom.
