Help me give my students some items to bring comfort to their home-school environment such as a cushioned reading pillow and a lap desk for each student which will help make their distance learning more enjoyable.
Our urban students are part of a large district with five high schools. Our district is one hundred percent free or reduced price lunch. For many of our students, school is more than a place of learning; it is a safe place where they have access to warmth, food, friends, and people who care about them. The relationships we have with our students mean everything to us. We are a family.
When our school closed down on March 13, many of us thought it was bad luck Friday the 13th, but we never expected for the school to be closed for the remainder of the year.
My previous projects have all been to benefit the students while they are in the classroom and even projects to help get them to the classroom safely. Now that they are at home, I am trying to make their environment as comfortable as possible.
My students' learning world has been turned upside down. The required distance learning that they are doing is now in a setting than is much different than ever before. Previously, learning was in a room that was designed for learning. Desks and tables, chairs and cushions, and adults monitoring the volume and behaviors of the room would make the most conducive space for learning to occur.
We now have to think outside the box and adjust to this new home-based learning environment.
Some students may have several more people living in their space than before. Others may have to watch over siblings and house chores while their guardians are essential workers. The challenges to their focus and concentration are many. These items will ease those distractions when the student is finally able to do their work.
