My students need flexible seating options to maximize their learning environment. This includes a high top table, two stools, two individual writing tables, and two lap desks.
My classroom consists of 25 amazing second-grade students. The class is a blend of six nationalities, three languages, and a wide range of learning abilities. Some students rely on the school for supplies, clothes, and food from local churches to take home for their families.
Our school is a Title I school with 75% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
About 19% of our student population is receiving services through special education, and 11% are receiving services as English language learners.
My Project
Over the past few years. studies show that sitting all day in traditional desks and chairs is not the best way for students to learn. My students need space and a little freedom when they work. I found that when I give my students a choice while they work, they are more motivated! Students who are motivated to work accomplish more!
My students deserve a classroom where they feel comfortable to learn with one another and to learn from one another.
Some students need to have the freedom to move around, stand, or sit where they feel comfortable. Alternative desk options such as lap desks and individual writing tables allow students to sit or lay on carpets, pillows, or cushions to learn instead of forcing the student to sit at a traditional desk that restricts their ability to move. This allows students to be more comfortable to better focus on their learning.
My students have varying needs and are motivated in very different ways. It is my goal to reach each of my students by meeting their individual needs and by providing them the best environment for learning. A high top table, stools, lap desks, and writing tables provide students a way to find comfort in their classroom. The more comfortable the students are, the more relaxed they become and the greater opportunity they have to become passionate about their learning.
A classroom with flexible work spaces allow my students freedom and an opportunity to work collaboratively or independently to meet their varying learning styles.
