The majority of our fabulous students (98%) come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of these children have responsibilities at home that make it difficult for them to function at one hundred percent when they come to school (making dinner, caring for younger siblings because parents are at work, etc.) They take what they have, however, and make the most of it. They may not be able to provide pencils or paper, but they are never without a smile.
Despite all of the challenges that they face, their hearts remain full of hope and love.
I want to create a comfortable place where my students can sit and enjoy a great book. A comfortable reading corner would be a great place for students to read in the library.
Having comfortable chairs and a rug where they can sit or lay down will encourage them to want to read more.
They will also be using this area during independent reading and workstations. Students will be moving around the room to complete reading responses, take AR tests and read to self. With the timers the students will be able to practice fluency as well as keeping track of when they need to move on to the next task. With the book stand students will be able to have better access to our big books.
