My students need the comfortable Dot Spots classroom seating rug so they can all sit together for instruction and classroom discussions. We also need individual carpet squares for group and partner work.
I teach fourth grade math, science and social studies at a magnet school for gifted and talented students. I have two classes; one is designated gifted (achieved the required score on psychological testing) and one that is designated talented (not classified as gifted but still pretty advanced learners). Our magnet designation means that we only take students at the beginning of the year. Families must fill out an application and go through a lottery process to enter our school.
The misconception in our district is that my students do not have to work hard since they are gifted/advanced learners.
Our students work very hard to maintain their grades. They consistently want to do well. They show me this with their goal setting. "I want a perfect score on the test, because that will show how much I know" and "I want to get a perfect score because I got a perfect last year" are things that my students frequently share with me when we conference about their math work.
My students impress me every day with their abilities. It is an honor to get to work with these bright, wonderful students.
This year my school will remove the carpet from my classroom. This will leave students having to sit on cold concrete tile. This will not be very comfortable for the students. One of the times that students can be most distracted is when their seating is not comfortable. This discomfort will lead them to be squirmy and inattentive.
Inattentive students can't learn, and I want my students to be as successful as possible.
Students will be able to sit comfortably during instruction and class discussions. Students will be able to engage with their peers, teacher, and material taught. This will lead to increased learning and more successful students.
