I am a 2nd grade teacher and have 22 students in my room this year. I am teaching in an inclusion classroom to help students with special needs be successful alongside their peers. I also have four students that are English Language Learners. Our school is located in Fayette County Public Schools and has a high population of special needs students. We strive to include these students in the mainstream classroom for as much time as possible. This provides for a diverse classroom experience for all students.
Having comfortable seating options for reading will increase student motivation to read. Each day we have a block of time for individual reading. Currently, students have the option of sitting on the tile floor or at their desk. They will enjoy this time of the day if they are able to select from some of these seating options instead. Being able to cozy up in a beanbag or move their body on an exercise ball will allow for students to select a seat they find to be most beneficial for them. I believe that students can develop a love for reading regardless of level and I think this would be a step toward that goal.
