Second graders are excited about learning and enjoy coming to school. Many of the students need to move around to be able to stay on task. This can be very disruptive to others. Providing the students with seating options that allow them to move without distracting others is ideal. There are also other benefits from providing wiggle seats and peanut seats for students.
Core muscle strength is a huge factor in fine motor skills such as handwriting.
Many of the students come to school lacking the basic developmental building blocks needed to be successful. I work closely with the occupational and physical therapists to best meet the needs of the students. The best option to help the students they work with is to provide wiggle seats or peanut seats to help strengthen their core. This in turn helps with fine motor skills.
The wiggle seats with help children calm down so they can focus on learning.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to make choices in the learning environment. This empowers them to discover what works best for them to complete their work. The increased focus allows them to demonstrate quality work. The students may sit at various levels of tables, on multiple types of seating, on bean bag chairs or a couch with clipboards. The freedom to move around the room and choose their own seating has been beneficial with previous groups. I have found that the students make good choices. Surprisingly, the seating choice may change for a student in different subject areas. I will use the bean bags, couch, and poufs to increase the seating choices in the classroom for this year’s class and classes in the future.
