Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you make the choice to read on your own, do you sit on a cold hard floor, or a place that's more comfortable like an over-sized chair with a lot of pillows? My students enjoy reading, but we don't have enough "comfy" spots in our room. I would like if they would associate reading with comfort.
My students are first graders in a public school.
Most of my students come from low-income families. They have a hunger for learning, and the families of my students appreciate helping and asking for suggestions about what they can do at home. However, most of my students do not have books at home. The classroom is a very stimulating environment, in which they have many choices of reading material. I strive to make the classroom emulate an age-appropriate, comfortable environment as much as possible that encourages reading and gives them positive associations with reading.
My Project
The over-sized, fluffy beanbags will give these young children more choices of comfortable places to choose to sit and read. Because the beanbags will feel less institutional than the cold, hard floor or a hard chair, students will begin to associate reading with a comfortable activity that they may want to choose to do. They may also feel more like they are in a home than a classroom, hopefully encouraging them to transfer their interest in reading to their homes.
Please help my students by helping to provide big, comfy beanbag chairs.
It will motivate them to lounge longer while flipping through their books. If students see reading as an activity that they enjoy doing and can do in a comfortable curled-up position, they will want to do it more often!
