Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low-income/title 1 school district, and my students are face several challenges both in and out of the classroom. This year we were struck by Hurricane Harvey and although our school was not damaged, the homes of many of my students were. Despite the hardships they have faced, they are resilient and spirited learners making their way back.
They like to move, they love to read, and love lots of positive attention.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
I am in the process of setting up alternate flexible seating in my classroom. I have done the best I can with what the school was able to provide, and I have already spent money out of pocket to get what I have so far.
My goal is to make a welcoming and friendly classroom where children will have the choice of where they want to sit and get rid of traditional desks all together.
Hopefully by giving students these choices, they can take ownership of their learning and can all be more successful.
The lighting items create an ambiance in the room and will allow students to see our projector better without it being pitch black in the room.
The wobble stools are one of the most active seating options and worth every penny although they are very expensive.
The gaming chairs are probably the most popular option that students request to sit in.
Many students prefer to work on the floor and have specifically asked for some sort of cushion and a hard surface to write on as opposed to just the hard floor. For that reason, I am requesting the lap desks and seat cushions.
The rest of the items are organizational and will help free up more space for the other options.
