Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are of African American and Latin American decent. They are all learning Spanish and English in an attempt to be, not only bilingual, but bi-literate. In an effort to ensure they are successful, I must provide them with a wide variety of literature in both languages and space in which they can interact and converse in the language of instruction.
Inviting spaces are essential in the learning environment to create and foster student interactions with one another.
I am looking for some assistance in creating a space that my students can use and one that can maintain order during the instructional provided. Whole group areas for students to be able to meet and converse as well as hold discussion while maintaining a manageable noise level is critical.
As a third grade group, my students still enjoy sharing space where they can be close to their peers in order to hold discussions and feel connected as a whole.
My Project
Carpeted areas for whole group instruction is key in a lower grade classroom. Although my students are in that transitional grade, students still require a space where they can collaborate and share their thinking. A carpet in a key element to facilitate this.
Students need an area where they can move away from the traditional chair and desk in order to get their blood flowing and stimulate their brains.
This space will allow students to interact with other peers than the ones they sit beside regularly. This space also allows for quick changes in conversation partners throughout the academic day. Students need opportunities to have varied interactions and having a carpet would facilitate that.
