I teach English for special education high school students at a Title I public high school in Kansas.
My students are primarily low-income, minority students and all have varying degrees of disabilities.
My students have learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, emotional disabilities, and physical disabilities. However, they are not defined by their disabilities. They are wise, funny, talented, and hardworking.
When I look at my students, I see people who love to sing. I see people who have deep thoughts that others often overlook. My students care about justice, their families, the mental health of their friends, their pets, and even politics. They are just like you and me.
My Project
Many of my students struggle with reading, and because of this, some of them hate reading. For this reason, I work hard to make sure that they have access to a variety of books so that they might find one that engages them, beginning a love of reading.
By donating to this project, you will be helping me give my students access to books that are both accessible and engaging to them.
On top of that, I have included items, such as the essential oil for diffusing and the light bulbs for hanging up, that will help create a setting where students are comfortable enough to challenge themselves with reading a new book.
I have seen the difference a good book can make in the life of a teenager, and I am grateful for your willingness to partner with me in making sure they find one.
