Ms. Mariani from Plainfield NJ is requesting Flexible Seating through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Comfortable and Flexible Writing Space

Help me give my students a comfortable, modern, and flexible wrting environment. For many of them, trying to sit at desk and write an essay is restrictive and uncomfortable. They need a space that feels safe.

My Students

Help me grow young, inspiring writers! My middle schoolers are a hilarious, hardworking, talented, energetic group of 12-13 year olds. They love spending time in their community playing sports, helping others, and enjoying life. They take interest in everything from political hot topics, to far off places and weird science! They are inspired by young people who are making a positive contribution to the world, such as Malala. Many of my students have dreams to give back to others throughout the world. A large percent of my students have come from Central and South American, as well as Middle Eastern coutries. They tend to use their experiences and the experiences of their family to see the world with open eyes, loving hearts and sharp minds. They ask a LOT of questions, which I love! Their curiosity and eternal optimism motivates me to be a better teacher every day.

My students don't always see themselves as writers, and often see writing as an impossible obstacle.

I hope to teach them that they are all ALREADY writers, with their own amazing stories to tell!

My Project

The materials I have requested will ensure my classroom truly feels like a place where my students can become strong readers and writers. In my 5 years of teaching English, I've learned that they ALL have stories to tell; some harder to tell than others. Many of my students come from economic hardships and complicated family situations. I try my best to make MY classroom a comfortable environment where students can feel safe to talk and write about their experiences, no matter what they may be. Today's kids need an outlet and safe place to be themselves, discuss their challenges and find community in their peers.

With comfy seating options, I can create not only an effective writing environment, but a sort of sanctuary for all students.

In addition to a comfortable environment, these items will help me build a meeting center where we can come together as a class and discuss accomplishments of the day, challenges, goals and just catch up. Writing itself is an intimidating, lengthy, frustrating process. These items will no doubt transform my classroom into a warm, friendly, safe space and surely foster the creativity of young writers.
