This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My role as a school social worker can be both rewarding and challenging at times. My school is located in a large urban city with a very diverse population. Over 95% of the student body live below the poverty level and most of their families receive some sort of public assistance.
To remain in compliance of the uniform policy during the cold winter months the students are in need of long sleeved shirts or sweatshirts without hoods.
Most of our families have a difficult time purchasing uniforms and basic personal items for their children. The student body consists of young people in grades 8 through 12. Their ages range from age 13 to age 19 years.
There are still many cold days ahead and staying warm and staying in compliance is important to many of our students.
My Project
This has been a really cold winter. Our students are either walking to school or waiting at a bus stop in the bitter cold. Along with trying to keep our students as warm as possible, we attempt to teach them to follow the rules and remain in compliance with our district dress code.
Some of them wear hooded sweatshirts outside of the school, but when they enter the building the "hoodies" must be removed to remain in compliance of the dress code.
I just want to make the transition easier for those students by providing warm sweatshirts for them to wear while they are in the school. It keeps them warm and in compliance which makes for a more productive day at school.
