I am a third grade teacher at Beethoven Elementary School located on the south side of Chicago. This is a Chicago Public School where ninety-nine percent of the students are low-income. 100% of the students in my class receive free lunch. I am a first year teacher who is dedicated to providing my students with the best possible education. My goal is to make reading fun and enjoyable. For many of my students, school is their only opportunity to read. I must make sure their experiences with books are all positive. I want to foster a love of books and instill in my students the importance of reading. In order to accomplish this, I need a classroom library that is comfortable so my students will want to spend time there. This requires a rug that is large enough for the entire class to sit on at once. A large rug would help during read alouds, class discussions, independent reading time, as well as many other times throughout our day. It is hard for my students to have a class discussion sitting in their desks. I think a large rug would help create a positive atmosphere where my students could feel free to share their thoughts with each other. I have worked very hard to create a wonderful classroom library and I feel we are almost there! If our class library was comfortable, I think my students would spend a lot more time there and, therefore, a lot more time reading!
