My students need beanbag seats and rest mats to create a calming space to sit or lie down when their anxiety and frustration level is high due to their severe emotional behavior disorders.
I currently teach in a Title I school where my students are often in our free lunch and breakfast program due to their low socioeconomic status. I teach students who have emotional and behavioral disabilities. These students are often diagnosed with mood disorders, ADHD and autism. They have many sensory needs. They can be verbally and physically aggressive. Without my support, they would be unsuccessful in school.
The students I teach need differentiated seating to focus and complete their work.
They are very active and need items which allow them to exert their energy in positive ways rather than negative ways.
My Project
Bean bag chairs and resting mats in calming colors will provide an area in my sensory room for my students to use to decompress when their anxiety and frustration levels are increased due to their emotional behavior disabilities.
Often times in school environments, there are too many sensory stimuli for students with disabilities to cope with.
These stimuli can trigger anxiety and frustration in my students, and they often need to come to my sensory room to calm and decompress.
One way to do this is to find a corner of the room where they can sit or lie down comfortably in a quiet environment until their anxiety or frustration subsides. The bean bag chairs and resting mats will provide this comfort for my students.
