Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
2019-2020 is my 9th year teaching, but my 1st year in urban education. I am proud to teach in a city that was founded upon blue collar manufacturing jobs but is now home to high unemployment rates, a large immigrant community, and many struggling residents. Many of my students are dealing with challenges related to recent immigration, and the majority reside in low-income households and neighborhoods.
After initial assessments were given, I have found that 96% of my students have come to me reading 3-6 levels below grade level.
Despite struggling with fluency and comprehension, lacking the basic foundations needed to succeed at Language Arts, and handling the difficult life challenges they face, my students come to class every day ready to give their best and grow as readers and writers. I am so happy to be able to impact their lives, and am so eager to give them the best possible education and facilitate as much growth as I possibly can. Please help me do my best!
My Project
With a large disparity in reading levels in my largest classes, I conduct my classes in small group format so that I can address every student's individual needs. Our groups range from 2-6 students. Right now, I have a few desks put together, and even my smallest groups can't really fit and also have space to work.
This kidney-shaped table will give my students a space to efficiently conference and learn in small group format.
This table will solve many issues in conducting effective instruction, while also giving students more flexible seating options. Students work in different ways, and I try to give them some agency in how they work on any given day. This table will give us plenty of space to spread out and work together and individually.
