My Students

My amazing third grade students are a kind and curious bunch who love to learn. They constantly support each other with positive statements like "you can do it" and "keep trying" when a classmate is discouraged or feeling down. They persevere through challenges and always have a bright smile to share. We are so lucky to have an incredible community of students, staff, and volunteers who work together to educate our children. Our class is part of the largest elementary school in the largest city in our state. Our students come from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Approximately 65% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

My Project

My students would love to be able to have somewhere else to work and meet besides their desk. They could sprawl out to read or write. They could do puzzles on the floor or build towers. We could have our class meetings together in a circle promoting a feeling of equality for all. I'm grateful my students have desks to work at, but it would be wonderful for them to have some choice in their learning environment.

A rug helps a class become a community by facilitating connections and conversations.

Elbow to elbow and knee to knee helps us feel like a community.
