Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm sure you remember the days of "Sam I Am" and the nonsensical lyrics of Shel Silverstein. My students are beginning an exploration into the world of poetry.
My third graders are energetic and avid readers and writers.
However, many students still struggle with basic sounds and identification of rhymes. Already this year, we've read some poetry, but students often fail to laugh at simple metaphors or word play and do not understand the subtleties that make poetry so enriching for adult readers. As accomplished readers ourselves, we appreciate literary devices such as alliteration, rhyme, rhythm, and onomatopoeia. I hope you can help open my students eyes to the beauty of poetry!
My Project
In an effort to increase their love of reading and writing, as well as to get them ready to out-perform their peers in higher income communities on the state test, I am requesting access to poetry anthologies and books that clearly exemplify such literary devices as alliteration etc. With daily read-alouds and activities centered around poetry, I have no doubt that my students will never want to stop reading!
The strong foundation of renowned poets in a classroom library is a must-have, but due to financial restrictions, both our school and classroom currently own NO poetic resources.
With your help, my students will be reading and writing their own poetry in no time!
