I work in a highly energetic fifth grade classroom. I work hard to create a love for lifelong learning, and I encourage students to ask the why questions. All of my students require tailored instruction to meet their individual needs.
Research has shown that physical activity is correlated with higher academic performance and improved behavior.
I would love to give all my wonderful children the opportunity to thrive. As it is now, my students have nowhere to sit but on the hard floor or in the school supplied rigid, uncomfortable desk chairs.
I want to provide my students with a classroom environment that feels more like home. They ask all the time if they can sit somewhere else, and I want to create an environment that lets them do that just, so they can think more about learning and less about how uncomfortable they are.
My Project
Offering changes in positions and movement opportunities throughout the day gives children much needed bursts of activity. A multi-sensory approach to learning contributes to better learning outcomes, improved attention, greater focus, and less restlessness. Movement also improves participation and behavior. By encouraging my students to sit where they like, I will be providing them with tools to help them succeed. Frequent postural adjustments strengthen the core abdominal and truck musculature, promoting better muscle control when using a pencil, crayons and other classroom tools.
My goal is to offer students a comfortable spot sit and still be able to meet their learning targets.
We need the Flex-Space Collaborative Floor Work Space Bundle. Not being restricted to a desk and chair allows for flexibility both in body and mind and fosters a more dynamic learning environment.
You wouldn't want to sit in the same spot all day, so why should we ask kids to do it for 7 hours a day? Movement increases blood flow, and increased blood flow increases brain function. Increased brain function means deeper thinking, and deeper thinking leads to new knowledge.
