I teach little stars with bright futures that will shine brighter with your help. My students have curious minds and the biggest hearts you could imagine. We are a Title I school. The majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We have a backpack program that provides students with food for the weekend. We have a clothes closet to help with uniforms and shoes. Our community has even helped pay family's utilities.
Our school is a very special place.
Our students come from a wide variety of situations. Many of our students live with single parents, grandparents, aunts, or foster families, because their parents are no longer a part of their life. We also have a large Latino population. Many of our students come to school not only learning a new language, but they may never have even held a pencil. Thus making, knowing how to read or write all the more challenging.
However, our students come with joy in their hearts, because they know when they get to school they are safe, loved, supported, and are surrounded by people that believe in them.
My Project
The under the sea scuba scene will make such an inviting place for my students to sit in their beach chairs and get lost in a good book. Children get tired of sitting in the same place all the time. I believe having such a special place for buddy reading and independent reading will encourage students to want to read even more. Since here on the Gulf Coast we love our beaches and teach our students about our environment, my classroom has an ocean theme. This rug will lend itself perfectly to teaching about all forms of sea life and prompt further interest in saving our oceans. A hard tile floor is not comfortable nor is it very inviting.
The hands around the world rug will serve as an excellent gathering place to bring our classroom family together.
Here we will do whole group activities, math and reading manipulatives and games, and be able to spread out with an oversized big book. Children at this age are beginning to develop their social skills. After a comfortable, cooperative learning space will further contribute to their positive growth and development. A hard tile floor is not comfortable nor is it very inviting.
I want to teach my students to love and respect others. The concept of this gathering place will also be to foster that mutual respect for others. I believe building that foundation at this tender time in their lives is critical to our futures.
