My Project

Come One, Come All...I have been teaching first grade for years and every year I am faced with my students entering first grade at different starting points. My school is largely free/reduced lunch and do not have good parental support. My goal is to help every child learn to read or become a better reader by the end of the year. That is 10 short months for one teacher to work his/her magic. We like to think all parents are putting their child's educational needs first but that is just not the case at my school and in today's society. Teachers have to become better equipped with the necessary materials they need to be able to give their students a chance to become fluent readers.

The decodables I am requesting will benefit my students on all levels (below, on, and above grade level).

The books are separated by skill which allows me to teach the letter/sounds in isolation and then give each child the chance to apply their new learning by reading a controlled decodable text. This increases independent reading and supports self confidence and self esteem. I know the school year is coming to an end but I am thinking ahead for the new school year. This has continued to be an issue year after year so I am putting a plan in place to start the new year off efficiently. This project is not about reaching one specific group of kids but to reach all my future first graders in the years to come.
