My average day in the classroom begins when I welcome my eighth-grade students, including regular, special, and emotional needs children, into our class. I want my students to succeed. My students like to participate in the school drama club, which is why I sponsor this activity. I teach in a large, diverse, K-8 high poverty school in an urban area of Philadelphia that experiences crime. Our school receives Title I funding, and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students come to school eager to learn from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters, or extended family living.
My students are the most eccentric, funny, and smart kids you would ever want to meet.
Our skill levels and overall level of support vary by student. Some of my students require additional academic support, and some require additional emotional support. One thing that is universal is our desire to work together.
On the first day of school, we identify ourselves as "a family." A family takes care of one another and looks out for one another. This is what we do. We work together to accomplish our goals.
My Project
My students need a new Chromebook to add to our technology station. In our classroom, my students work hard at accepting one another for who they are and welcoming all into the fold. However, we need more technology in our classroom to allow my students to work on their interventions and tasks throughout the day.
Some of our activities are literacy intervention programs, while others are Scholastic based (both Scope and Choices).
Our Choices magazine allow students to learn about acceptance and tolerance in various environments. Having additional technology will allow more students to access these valuable tools in the classroom.
