Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My seventh- and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. My students are diversity personified—from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.
After 18 months of being isolated from their friends and teachers, they are still trying to navigate the return to school and academics.
Many of them are have developed anxieties that may potentially take years to overcome. Getting back to normal hasn't come soon enough—we need to mitigate the learning loss and social isolation they have experienced for the past 18 months. Unfortunately, many of them have lost close family members to COVID and are struggling with grief as well.
Although I can't solve these problems, I continue to do my very best to provide my students with learning opportunities that will excite them and allow them to focus on better days ahead.
My Project
My middle school technology students love to play and get hands-on with creative engineering and coding projects. The Makey Makey Classroom STEM Kit extends beyond the screen and brings engineering and coding concepts to life in ways that are sure to engage my students' curiosity and get them excited about engineering and coding!
With this Makey Makey, students can make a bunch of projects: for example, they can turn everyday objects into touchpads, craft their own circuit boards, and make musical circuits with items around the classroom.
I truly believe that all students can become makers if given the opportunities to experiment and explore. After all, who WOULDN'T want to create a piano made with BANANAS?
