Ms. Campbell from Brooklyn NY is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a listening center boombox and a document scanner.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students attend a Title I school and are from diverse ethnic/cultural backgrounds, namely Bangladeshi, Chinese, Hispanic, and French. 95% of them are Latino and African America. The rest are sparsely mixed with other ethnicities. In my classroom, there are students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
As a K/1 self-contained bridge class, many of my 1st graders are reading way below grade level and my kindergarteners are reading below the Pre-k level which is partly due to their strong Hispanic backgrounds.
In order to create a community of learners who enjoy engaging discussions among their peers, It is my hope that this piece of technology will help to boost the confidence of my students' speaking and listening abilities in all areas but especially in math. The opportunity and achievement gaps are clearly apparent among our student population.
My students struggle with listening and speaking, especially, when it comes to explaining their mathematical thinking. I'm requesting a boombox with a headphone splitter so that I can create a listening area for math. While in this station, the students will have the opportunity to listen to math books on tape or CDs and follow along as they're being read. They will also practice speaking and listening by their exposure to mathematical conversations in audio format.
In my classroom, we practice daily collaborative learning strategies through the turn and talk method which helps with listening and speaking.
This piece of technology will help my students to become more confident in their listening and speaking skills. This, in turn, will provide the key to opening doors for them in the future.
