My students are interesting individuals. They come from all walks of life with a variety of experiences. When they come together as a class, they bring their own unique perspectives and outlooks. Sharing who we are as human beings makes all our lives better.
We believe in building a positive relationship with each of our students.
One way we do this is to meet in small groups each day to work with students who need help with their reading skills. In grades four and five our students practice their reading fluency independently and then meet with a teacher to chart their progress. Our goal is to meet the needs of all our students.
At all grade levels, we work hard to engage our students in their learning! We celebrate learning at each student's pace, and focus on individual growth while creating a community of caring learners.
My Project
With the assistance of the Chicopee Fresh Farm to School Coordinator and our FoodCorps Service Member, we intend to implement the Backyard Growers’ Salad Days program in our school garden. We need screws, L-angles, landscape fabric, a hose, and sprayer to assemble and care for our raised vegetable beds. This program would allow every student in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade to have three hands-on gardening experiences and two seed-to-fork experiences per year. In April, each class would come out to the garden and plant lettuce. In June, students would harvest and wash the lettuce they grew and plant fall crops including beets, carrots, squash, potatoes, and dry beans. The lettuce would be prepared and served as a salad in the school cafeteria the day after it was harvested. In September, students would harvest and wash the fall crops they grew. The fall crops would then be prepared and served in the school cafeteria the day after they were harvested. This program has been successful in other Chicopee schools, and our students are very excited to grow their own food!
