My students need a compost starter kit to save the planet and grow a greener community through our campus greenhouse, pollinator garden, and raised vegetable beds.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is in the beginning stages of a Farm to School initiative, and my students have developed an interest in protecting the environment through "green" farming techniques, like composting and recycling.
My elementary is a Title 1, STEAM focused, Farm to School Charter School in Georgia.
Our students have a hunger for learning and a thirst to live a healthier lifestyle. We are K-5 school where students come from a variety of backgrounds, and this project will offer all students an opportunity to learn the importance of planting, growing and harvesting the food they eat. The students and parents at Hampton Elementary Charter School are amazing! Students are always willing to try new things and our parents are right there to support our new initiatives. Our Farm to School program is no different!
The students at HECS are eager to learn the importance of farming and sustainability through our greenhouse and raised garden beds. All students at HECS will have the opportunity to plant, maintain and harvest their various fruits and vegetables to take to our student kitchen. In order to grow nutrient rich foods in our school garden, the students will need to use the compost to provide nutrients to our gardens without the use of fertilizers or other harmful chemicals.
This project will not only provide a hands-on learning opportunity for each student, but it will also teach them sustainable methods of waste disposal through recycling and composting.
Students will also learn the importance of planting and harvesting their own food for consumption, and it is our hope that our students take this knowledge to their own homes and share the importance with their families!
