I am a First Grade Teacher in a Title I school where over 90% of students receive free/reduced lunch. I have a classroom full of wonderful 6 and 7 year olds that I have come to love as my own. In this low income area, for many students, school is the safest and most comfortable place that the child knows. I work hard to make sure that I provide this necessary stability and comfort to the students in my classroom.
My goal is provide my students with the most optimal learning environment so that they view school and our classroom as a place where they will always be safe and feel comfortable. Unfortunately, with lack of funding, I am not able to create my ideal classroom environment without your help. I want to provide my students with a cozy reading center where they can curl up with a good book, but as of now, all I am able to provide is old, dirty carpet squares. Although I am thankful for these, and the students enjoy being able to sit on the "reading squares", I dream of something bigger for them!
The durable and comfortable sofa and chair set will be a perfect addition to our reading corner. The students will truly get to experience the joys of being entranced by a good book, while relaxing and feeling cozy on the couch or chair. These are luxuries that they do not experience at home, and so far, do not experience at school either. Imagine their excitement to get to go read in the library when there is a soft sofa available, instead of a dirty old carpet square. Just the seating alone will encourage children to read! It doesn't take much!
Your sofa and chair gift to our library corner will bring a new and much needed excitement to the classroom library. It will encourage students to pick up a book and read, while allowing them to feel safe and comfortable; something many of them only feel when they are at school.
