I teach in a highly gifted fifth- and sixth-grade classroom. My students are screened to have an IQ of 145 or above and are considered to be tomorrow's future leaders. I work very hard to ensure that they have an educational experience above and beyond the typical curriculum so that they are challenged and inspired. I try to use a variety of technologies in my teaching and have been coming up with ideas for showing clips of movies as either an introduction to a topic or as a closing activity.
For example, when we were studying the work of Georges Seurat in art, I was concurrently teaching musicals in the music class and thought it would be a great idea to show Sondheim's musical "Sunday in the Park with George" to tie the two together. I had also hoped to have the students do a compare/contrast essay on the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird," which they just finished reading, and the movie version. When two of my students were creating an experimental flying machine, I wished I could show them the Wright Brothers' film our library has. I'm not in the habit of showing films just to fill time, but there are many meaningful experiences that can be taken from this genre, and it would be very helpful to have the technology in the classroom.
Our school has 1,100 students, which is very large for an elementary school, and we only have eight televisions equipped with VCRs to share. It is often difficult to get a TV during the right time of day, and it is always a struggle to get the VCRs to work properly. And, as you know, DVDs have taken over, and we don't have any DVD players on campus; so rentals from video stores have become obsolete. We would so appreciate your consideration of this proposal and are very grateful for your generosity.
