Giving students a sense of belonging helps their academic success. We are teachers at a low income school in Appleton, WI. With a lot of our students being in the poverty level there are not many opportunities provided to them for free or in range of their transportation outside of school. We have started a Performance Team as a club for students who make positive choices to be a part of. The club has been a huge motivator for students to get their school work done as well as be respectful to others in our school community. Having this club in place helps students feel a sense of belonging to their school community in a positive way. Every week, 3 days out of our 5 school days, these students give up their recess to come and practice and learn dance routines. The routines are then performed at our all school assemblies on Fridays.
My Project
Being a school that supports students and families in poverty, our Performance team give students the opportunity to show their talent and passion for dance. The Columbus Performance Team is open to Columbus students in grades 1 through 5. The goal of this team is to promote opportunities for our youth to demonstrate their passion for our school community!
We are looking to get pom poms for students to use during all school assembly performances.
These poms will be used for multiple years making an impact for many student in our school community. Having poms gives the students a full experience of what it is like to be on a performance team which they otherwise might not have due to their financial situations.
