I teach at an elementary school located in the foothills of North Carolina, an area that used to be known as the "Furniture Belt." Unfortunately, many of the parents of our students have been affected by downsizing and plant closings, creating financial hardship for the families. The majority of our students are on free or reduced lunch, which means that we get federal money for reading programs, but there is not much money left for art projects - in the family budget or in the school budget. For the past few years, my assistant and I have endeavored to make a scrapbook for each student in our class by saving items of student work, certificates, pictures, and other items of interest. These have been very well-received by parents, and it has been goal of mine for students to make collages for a "take-home" art activity. Of course, we have done many activities with paper scraps, Popsicle sticks, cotton balls, pasta shapes, and other items to be found in the home or around the school, but I would like to see us have the opportunity to use items that we cannot financially provide. Children are naturally drawn to anything that is colorful or shiny, and we would much appreciate having some special materials to use in order to create our projects. The opportunities to create through collage are only limited by the imaginations of the children, and using art as a form of expression is one of the best ways to enlarge and build upon those ideas.
