Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a Title I school in North Las Vegas, Nevada. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch due to their low socioeconomic status. There are many challenges my students face outside of school, but despite those challenges, they come to school ready to learn.
My role at the school is to help students overcome their unique challenges by providing them with resources, basic needs, and individual case management.
The resources I provide include school supplies, clothing, food, etc. along with behavior, attendance, and academic interventions.
My Project
My students have been in virtual learning since the beginning of the school year. I've worked with them to adjust to their new learning style and part of that is teaching my students how to calm down when stressed or overwhelmed.
SEL skills are an important part of developing well-rounded successful students.
One strategy I've taught my students is that when they're overwhelmed or need a break, to engage in an activity that takes their mind somewhere else. Coloring is the perfect activity. It allows them to be artistic but also helps them take their mind off the current situation, calm down, relax, and center themselves so they can tackle various stressors in their day.
This project will allow me to give my students their own coloring books and crayons to color their stressors away and soothe their souls in a positive manner.
