The alternative students in my class are a diverse group, with diverse needs, from diverse backgrounds. They are united in the struggle of navigating the academic, social, and emotional trials of the high school experience.
The Alternative Placement classroom creates a community which welcomes every student, providing them with a space to build friendships and experience success.
My nontraditional students need a safe space where they can be given the tools, skills, and support they need to look towards the future and achieve their goals.
My Project
Being a modern day teenager is tougher than you can imagine. Students are expected to fit a mold and color inside the lines...but what happens when you can't color inside the lines? Or won't color inside the lines? Or thought that's what you were doing and can't figure out why others think it looks all wrong?
My students' best resource is each other - which is why we spend a day a week focusing on communication, social skills and building relationships.
My students need an assortment of art supplies, such as craft paper and art pens, to help us create an array of different activities to motivate and engage students to express themselves in open communication. They may not always color inside the line - but that doesn't mean their works of art aren't meant to be seen and shared with others. We are also requesting the materials to make dreamcatchers and use for other crafts, as we talk about our dreams and plan for future goals. These art supplies will help students express themselves, open themselves to communication, and be the building blocks for learning more about social skills as we navigate the difficult world of being a modern teenager.
