All of my students have a story to tell and sometimes putting that story into words is difficult. This could be the year my students' writing tells a story with details, organization and voice.
I teach fourth grade in a small, mid-city school.
We have approximately 300 students ranging in age from Kindergarten to Sixth Grade. We have about 30 hearing impaired students most of whom mainstream into the regular classrooms during at least part of the day. This year I will have three full-time hearing impaired students in my class. We serve a variety of ethnic backgrounds and many of these students come to us speaking little or no English. Our district provides free breakfast for all students and more than half the students at our school also receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our staff is committed to the success of EVERY student in our building.
My Project
One of the biggest challenges facing a fourth grade student is the state writing test. By having this class set of highlighters, students will be able to revise and edit their rough drafts using a color-coding system. While writing, I can highlight a noun in pink, if an adjective is needed or highlight a verb in green, if an adverb is needed. This guides the student while giving them the opportunity to choose just the right word. The electric pencil sharpener will ensure that every student has a sharpened pencil when ready to write!
Having the electric pencil sharpener and different colored highlighters will help my students improve their writing skills by providing them with the supplies they need to make their writing stronger.
