My students need easel Post-It stick pads and chisel tip markers. Transporting items back and forth, I have to prepare my lessons on Post-It pads in advance.
My students at Halau Ku Mana PCS are special because majority of them are of Hawaiian ancestry, who are wanting to learn more about their identity and our place in the world. We focus on three different areas: the land, the family and our community. Ways in which we do so are by building grounding and foundation, forge direction and connections, and by providing sustenance and empowerment. Our students excel not only in the classroom, but on the land, on the ocean and within their communities.
My Project
I have to transport my things back and forth between different classrooms. By the time I reach the classroom for my 55-minute period, I do not have enough time to write the schedule, journal prompt or assignments on the board, so I have to be creative by writing them during my teacher prep time earlier during the day.
Preparing the Post-It chart paper with the daily schedule, journal prompt, and lessons, using colored the Mr. Sketch markers cuts my time down quickly and I am able to walk into the classroom and stick the Post It to the board without too much of a hassle.
Unfortunately, because I use them so much, I go through two sets of markers a year, so I have to replenish them every summer. With the Post Its and markers I can enter the classroom ready for my lessons.
For those who know me well know that I LOVE color! Using lots of color in my lessons keeps the studentsʻ attention on what I am doing. I use colored pens to take notes and under the ELMO or document projector I am able to use colored pens to demonstrate a method of note-taking that can help my students. Soon I see my students using this technique when taking notes. Color is especially helpful to my special education students who I can chunk lessons using different colors. I can tell my students to write the part in "blue," then the part in "purple," it makes note-taking fun! Please support my effort to create a colorful classroom!
