Are you able to listen and learn effectively when you're distracted by someone in your personal space? My first grade students need designated spaces to create boundaries in order to become successful learners.
I teach a unique group of first graders at a high poverty elementary school in NC.
These students are full of energy and full of life when they are in the classroom. Some students come with no sense of structure or routine. Many can assume that knowing about personal space is learned over time, however I can tell you from experience that for most students, it is something that needs to be taught and reinforced. From the very beginning of the school year, we become a classroom family of diverse learners. It is my goal to set high expectations for each and every student no matter what their background consists of.
My Project
Our carpet area is a place we gather to learn, share and explore throughout the school day. We discuss the calendar, recite poems, share stories, sing songs, solve math problems, write letters, and so much more. I have purchased carpets every year with no success. The squares are too small and the edges fray, which quickly becomes a new distraction. It is hard to tell students to sit in their spot when they don't really have a visual spot to designate as their own. Because we join together on the carpet often, it is imperative that I teach the students about respecting everyone and everything. One of the many challenges we face in first grade, is being aware of our personal space. With this new carpet, each student would be given a designated space to sit. Gone would be the days of arguing over who sits where and who's foot is in another student's space during precious learning time. It would provide structure and organization for a class of life long learners.
Some may wonder, will a carpet really increase student learning?
From a teacher with years of experience, I can assure you, it will! Please help me achieve my goal of creating a comfortable learning atmosphere for my students. This carpet will be a silent reminder of personal space, which will allow my students to focus on building friendships and excelling in all they do.
