Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my school do not have the opportunity to take many high level science classes. This year they will have the opportunity to take an AP level science course. Since this is the first AP science course at my school in a very long time I need to acquire equipment required for advanced lab
The students that I will teach are seniors in high school and come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
They live in a low income community and this school does not have a reputation of having the most demanding courses. This is the first advanced science class that they will have the opportunity to take. These kids are very enthusiastic but have many gaps in their math and reading education. They have hopes of attending college but their current high school education has not necessarily prepared them for a college-level classes. I hope to be able to provide them with the tools and skills required to succeed in college.
My Project
My school has not offered an AP science class in the past five years and I currently do not have sufficient equipment required to teach students about current laboratory techniques. I am requesting materials that will expose my students to common techniques that they will see in any college level chemistry course. Chemistry can be really fun and exciting when students can feel like they are actual scientists. In order to facilitate a laboratory atmosphere in my classroom, students need to be able to use the same kinds of techniques that scientists use. To be able to do scientific work my students need samples to analyze. I am requesting a kit that includes samples and all of the materials required to perform a simple experiment that teaches them about separating homogeneous mixtures.
My goal is to get more students excited about doing science but they cannot do any science without appropriate equipment.
In order to get my students to become scientists in my classroom I need to provide them with cutting-edge research tools so that they may conduct their own research.
