Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What I love about my students and what makes them special is that they are extremely diverse in several aspects of life. Ethnically, 67.3% of my students come from Hispanic or Latino backgrounds. Socioeconomically, 76.5% of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Lastly, my students are a variety of types of learners, from English Language Learners to learners with disabilities.
Students are constantly hanging out in my classroom before and after school, during brunch and lunch, and even during passing periods when they should be getting to class.
I strive to create an intentional positive safe space that is welcoming to and well-equipped for all students, even those who may not actually have me as a teacher. Many students have been receptive to my efforts by being open and honest with me about their lives and my teaching practice.
My Project
Primarily, these art products will make a difference in my students' learning by providing them with opportunities to bring art into the math classroom. I have not had access to these types of materials for any of my classes in the past and am eager to see what activities could be achieved with them. Specifically, students will be able to use the art sets and highlighters to emphasize specific ideas and create visually pleasing images. Students will be able to glue objects to the construction paper to show their end products, as well as see their work displayed in the classroom. Further, students will be able to express their ideas on the Post-it notes to be displayed for others to read.
Not only will these art supplies create student work to be displayed, but they will also promote the idea that math is not just about doing worksheets.
My classroom will continue to be a place where students enjoy coming to and have a desire to be a part of whatever is occurring inside. In addition, my classroom will constantly be stocked with the art supplies for students to use when needed without any disruption. Every item will have its assigned area for all students to access and students will learn to use the items only when necessary in order for them to last the entire school year.
